Robert Stephenson is renowned for his expertise in handmade carpets and rugs. He established his company in the early 80s and opened his shop, based in the heart of Chelsea in 1988. The stock is carefully curated and sourced from all around the world. Among the range are antique Persian and Turkish carpets, and an extensive selection of mid-twentieth century Scandinavian flatweaves, with a particular focus on designs by the celebrated Swedish textile artists; Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Agda Österberg and Anna-Greta Sjöqvist.
In addition, to the traditional and contemporary collections, Robert creates his own range of flatweaves. Influenced by the Swedish twentieth-century weaving technique of twisting different coloured yarns together, these hard-wearing rugs are characterised by a striking and rich colour palette. Robert is also known for his series of hand knotted carpets inspired by African textiles and ancient Greek vases, conceived in collaboration with the late interior designer Melissa Wyndham. Both collections are highly adaptable and can be used to great effect in traditional, modern and contemporary interiors.
Robert and his experienced sales staff understand the importance of providing a high standard of service and have expert knowledge of the rugs and how best to use and place them. They know that finding a carpet that perfectly suits your interior can seem daunting, and will guide you through the process, whilst making the experience interesting, informative and above all fun!
